What Are You Wearing Today?
What are you wearing today? It’s the question we ask ourselves each morning when putting on our game face for the day to come. How your approach your wardrobe can more than often influence how you approach your day and your career. When you develop the habit of presenting yourself in the best way, you set the tone for how you approach life and its adventures. Building the right wardrobe can seem challenging, but can be easily accomplished with a few simple basics.
For this article I am going to focus on a few of the basic staple pieces that should exist in every professional’s closet and the reason for why they are so important to have.
For men, it is universally agreed that he will never look better than when he does wearing a nicely fitted suit. Often times, however, less attention is paid to the fit, color and details of that suit and can easily miss the mark and cause the opposite effect. When it comes to color, the two colors that every man should own a tailored garment in are blue and gray. A navy blue power suit and a business ready gray or charcoal suit is the perfect way to start your rotation. For starters I would suggest to opt for plain patterns or a subtle pinstripe so that more wear can be achieved without noticeably looking like you are constantly wearing the same suit.
Once these basic items are acquired, your accessories will do the job of making each outfit look unique. Start with a couple of basic white dress shirts and add a few classy striped and checked shirts into the rotation to create pairings that are conservative yet still stylish. Remember to stick with base colors in your patterns that contrast well with the suit you are wearing. If you want to add more color, you can always do so with accessories such as ties, pocket squares, and of course a well-made pair of dress shoes.
When it comes to shoes you truly must always make sure to put your best foot forward. One of the biggest mistakes when it comes to a clean and polished appearance is as simple as choosing the wrong pair of shoes. If I had to narrow down one staple shoe that a business attire could not survive without, it would definitely be a pair of black cap toe or plain toe oxfords. Although I am a personal fan of brown and other colors, as a core go-to shoe, black is going to pair with virtually anything and any environment. The oxford style shoe is key because of its ability to be used in both formal as we as professional settings without looking too casual. Try not to skimp on quality as it will definitely show in the long run.
As with all clothing, remember to make sure the fit and quality are on point so that you are always getting the right message across and being taken as serious as you strive to be.
